Set across 640 acres in Hesse, around 30 minutes from Geelong and roughly 90 minutes from Melbourne, Barunah Plains is a genuine working Merino sheep station centred around a beautiful historic bluestone homestead. The property has been part of Victoria's pastoral history since the 1800s, and the original section of the homestead dates back to 1866.


What I like about a Barunah Plains wedding is that the property feels substantial without feeling like a commercial wedding complex. You have the homestead, formal gardens, paddocks, creek, old farm buildings and one very good bluestone Woolshed, but there is still a sense that you have simply taken over an incredible country property for the weekend.


And that is really the point here. Barunah Plains works particularly well if you want the wedding to feel like more than six hours on a Saturday afternoon.


Ceremony options

1) The Homestead Gardens

The gardens surrounding the historic homestead are probably the natural starting point for a ceremony.

There are established trees, beautiful lawns and the bluestone architecture sitting quietly in the background, so you do not need to add a huge amount to make the ceremony feel finished.

The property gives you plenty of freedom around exactly where everything happens, which means you can choose the position based on your guest numbers, styling and, importantly, where the light will be at the time of the ceremony.


2) Down by the creek

Warrambine Creek runs through the property and gives you something a little more natural and secluded.

This is a beautiful option if you want the ceremony to feel less formal than the homestead gardens. You still have the scale of Barunah Plains around you, but the trees, water and surrounding landscape make everything feel a little softer.


3) Somewhere completely your own

This is where Barunah Plains becomes quite different from a traditional wedding venue.

You are working with 640 acres, so you are not limited to one predetermined ceremony lawn. The estate encourages couples to make use of the wider property, whether that means a ceremony against the open paddocks, beside the homestead or somewhere overlooking the surrounding countryside.

If you have a strong idea of how you want the wedding to look, there is a lot of freedom here to make it happen.


Reception in The Woolshed

The Woolshed is probably the most recognisable reception space at Barunah Plains.

It has the character you would expect from an old working property, with bluestone, timber and all the texture that comes with a building that was never originally designed as a modern function room.


That is exactly what makes it good!


The venue currently lists capacity for around 200 seated guests or 300+ for a cocktail-style reception. It is large enough for a substantial wedding, but the materials and history keep it feeling warm once everyone is inside.

It also gives you a proper country reception without needing to manufacture a rustic look. The building has earned that character over a very long time.


Marquee weddings at Barunah Plains

If you want something larger or completely custom, a marquee wedding is the other obvious option.


There are multiple locations around the property where you can build a marquee, including areas with views back towards the homestead, creek, dry-stone walls and surrounding farmland.

Barunah Plains lists marquee capacity as essentially unrestricted, which means the size and format can be designed around the wedding rather than around the limitations of an existing room.


This is probably where the venue has the most creative potential. Long-table dinner under a clear marquee, drinks outside as the sun drops, then everyone inside once the temperature changes. It can be as polished or as relaxed as you want it to be.


A proper wedding weekend


This is one of the biggest reasons I would choose Barunah Plains. There is accommodation for 76 guests on the property, before you even start adding glamping.


The Homestead sleeps 22 guests across 10 bedrooms. The Shearers Quarters sleep 42 across 16 rooms, and the Jackaroo Quarters add another 12 guests across six ensuite rooms.

If you need more space, glamping and camping can also be set up around the estate.

That changes the feel of the wedding completely.


Your closest friends and family can arrive the day before, settle in, have dinner together, wake up on the property, celebrate the wedding, then get up the next morning and do it all again over breakfast or a recovery lunch.

There is no rush to squeeze every conversation into a five-hour reception.


Where to get ready


The Homestead would be my first choice. Apart from being convenient, it is genuinely beautiful inside. The historic rooms, high ceilings, fireplaces, leadlight windows and wide verandahs give the morning a sense of place that you simply do not get from a generic hotel room.


It also means your wedding gallery starts looking like Barunah Plains from the very beginning of the day.

The Shearers Quarters give you another completely different option for the other side of the wedding party. They are more relaxed and communal, with open fireplaces, a kitchen, barbecue and outdoor firepit.


Having both groups getting ready on the property also makes the logistics incredibly simple.


Flexibility is a big part of the appeal


Barunah Plains is privately owned, and the venue deliberately operates with more freedom than a conventional function centre.


There are no compulsory one-size-fits-all wedding packages, and couples can bring in their own caterers and preferred suppliers. If you need recommendations, the venue also has a network of people who already know the property.


That makes Barunah Plains particularly good for couples who already have a clear idea of what they want.

You can go formal and black tie. You can bring in food trucks. You can have a big marquee dinner. You can use the Woolshed. You can build an entire weekend around the Homestead.

  • The Woolshed and surrounding historic farm buildings
  • Open paddocks as the afternoon light begins to drop
  • Long country roads and driveways across the property
  • The Homestead interiors for something quieter and more editorial


For Barunah Plains wedding photos, I would keep the portrait session quite simple. The scale of the property already gives you those big landscape frames. You do not need to spend an hour driving around trying to prove how large it is.

Fifteen or twenty minutes around a few carefully chosen locations will give you plenty.

That is the real advantage of this place. There is no need to rush everyone in and out. The wedding can have a beginning, middle and end that stretches across an entire weekend.

That makes sense given the way the venue operates. A Woolshed wedding for 100 guests is going to be a very different event from a 250-person marquee wedding with accommodation and glamping across the property.

An older Barunah Plains pricing document is still floating around online and lists historical venue and accommodation fees, but those figures date back several years and I would not use them to budget a current wedding.
