Few Melbourne wedding venues have the sense of history and scale that you get at Werribee Mansion. Set within the grounds of Werribee Park, around 35 kilometres west of the city, the estate brings together grand architecture, formal gardens, old trees, open lawns and one of Victoria’s most recognisable historic buildings.
For couples planning Werribee Mansion weddings, the appeal is not simply the mansion itself. It is the amount of variety across the wider estate. You can hold the ceremony in the gardens, take portraits inside the mansion, wander through the rose garden, and then celebrate at The Refectory Werribee Mansion, all without sending guests across Melbourne between locations.
Having photographed weddings here, the thing that stands out is how much you can get from the property without making the day feel like a long photoshoot, which is always my goal when shooting weddings!
Ceremony options
1) The Parterre
For the classic Werribee Mansion view, The Parterre is hard to go past. The formal garden gives you colour, symmetry and open space, with the mansion itself rising behind the ceremony.
It is the location that most immediately says “Werribee Mansion wedding”, but it still feels calm once guests are seated and the ceremony begins. The architecture does most of the work, so it does not need to be heavily styled.
2) The Lake
The lake gives you a softer, more secluded ceremony setting. It feels romantic without being overly formal, with established trees, reflections on the water and plenty of greenery surrounding the ceremony.
This is a lovely option for couples who want to stay within the Werribee Park grounds but prefer something a little quieter than a ceremony directly in front of the mansion.
3) The State Rose Garden
The Victoria State Rose Garden contains more than 5,000 rose bushes, with the main flowering period generally running from October through to April.
At the right time of year, it is a beautiful ceremony location. It feels colourful and garden-led, while still giving you access to the wider Werribee Park estate for portraits afterwards.
4) Inside Werribee Mansion
For something genuinely different, ceremonies can also take place inside the mansion itself.
The interior has the kind of detail that is difficult to recreate anywhere else. The tiled entrance hall, columns, grand staircase and richly decorated rooms give the ceremony a real sense of occasion. An interior ceremony booking includes access to the main hallway, grand staircase, salon and first-floor landing. It is also a strong option for couples who want something more intimate, or who prefer not to rely on Melbourne’s weather.
Best spots for Werribee Mansion wedding photos
The hardest part about taking Werribee Mansion wedding photos is deciding where not to go. There is a lot of variety here, and it is very easy to spend too long moving through every possible location.
My favourites include:
The mansion façade and Italianate arches
The formal Parterre gardens
The grand staircase and entrance hall inside the mansion
The ornamental lake
The rose garden during flowering season
The grotto and historic glasshouses
The darker stone walls around The Refectory courtyard
The open lawns as the light begins to soften
Interior mansion photography needs to be booked in advance through Parks Victoria. The booking provides exclusive access during your allocated time to the main hallway, grand staircase, salon and first-floor landing. That booking is well worth considering. The interior photographs give the final gallery a completely different atmosphere from the gardens and outdoor architecture.
Reception at The Refectory Werribee Mansion
For many couples, the natural reception choice is The Refectory at Werribee Mansion. The Refectory sits within Werribee Park and brings a more contemporary layer to the heritage setting. The main Ballroom has high ceilings, designer chandeliers, classic architectural details and enough warmth that it still feels inviting once dinner begins.
Current venue capacities list:
- Up to 160 guests seated with a dance floor
- Up to 180 guests seated without a dance floor
- Up to 300 guests for a cocktail-style reception
It is large enough to host a substantial celebration, but it does not lose the intimacy that matters once speeches begin and the room settles into the evening.
The Courtyard
The Courtyard is one of my favourite parts of the Refectory Werribee Mansion experience.
The surrounding mansion walls, dark stone and lighter paving create a beautiful contrast, particularly once the light begins to drop. It works naturally for post-ceremony drinks, canapés or an outdoor reception setup, and it gives guests somewhere atmospheric to gather before moving into the Ballroom.
There is an old-world European feel to it, but it still feels relaxed. It is particularly beautiful in the evening when the lighting begins to soften and the venue shifts from ceremony into celebration.
The Barn and Farm
For couples drawn to something less formal, The Refectory also offers access to The Barn, Farm, orchards and garden areas.
These spaces show a different side of Werribee Park. You still have the history of the estate, but the bluestone buildings, timber trusses, exposed brick and old farm structures give the reception a warmer, more rustic character.
It is a nice alternative for couples who love Werribee Mansion but do not necessarily want a traditional ballroom wedding.
A quick note about Lancemore Mansion Hotel
It is worth understanding that The Refectory and Lancemore Mansion Hotel Werribee Park are separate wedding operations within the same wider estate.
The Refectory manages its Ballroom, Courtyard, Barn and garden reception experiences. Lancemore operates the hotel and its own ceremony and event spaces, along with guest accommodation, dining and a day spa.
That gives couples a few different ways to approach a Werribee Mansion wedding. You might hold the reception at The Refectory and stay at Lancemore, or build the entire celebration around one of Lancemore’s wedding packages.
Where to get ready
Having accommodation within the wider estate is a major advantage. Getting ready at Lancemore Mansion Hotel keeps the morning calm and avoids adding unnecessary travel to the timeline. It also makes the wedding feel like more of a complete experience. Guests can stay nearby, the wedding party can prepare in separate rooms, and there is no long drive waiting at the end of the night. For couples with guests travelling from interstate or regional Victoria, that convenience can make an enormous difference.

- Reception: The Refectory is located on South Drive within Werribee Park.
- Ceremonies: Multiple garden locations are available, including the Parterre, Lake, State Rose Garden, Silky Oak, Lemon Scented Gums and the Mansion itself.
- Photography: Garden and interior mansion photography permits are managed through Parks Victoria.
- Accommodation: Available within the estate at Lancemore Mansion Hotel Werribee Park.
- Parking: Guest and wedding vehicles must remain in designated parking areas, as cars are not permitted within the gardens.
What does a Werribee Mansion wedding cost?
There is not one fixed Werribee Mansion wedding cost, because there are two separate reception operators within the wider Werribee Park precinct, plus additional Parks Victoria fees for ceremonies and photography around the mansion and gardens.
For a reception at The Refectory Werribee Mansion, current public venue listings place wedding packages at approximately $175 to $220 per person, depending on the package, date and inclusions. The standard package is generally based on five hours, with additional time publicly listed at around $28 per person, per hour. Minimum spends and minimum guest numbers may also apply, so these figures are best treated as a starting point rather than a final quote.
Weddings operated through Lancemore Mansion Hotel Werribee Park are publicly listed from approximately $185 to $189 per person, although some current directory listings show a broader range of around $210 to $250 per person depending on the space, menu, season and package selected.
It is also important to allow for the separate Parks Victoria ceremony and photography permit. Current 2026–27 fees include:
- $959.40 for a two-hour ceremony in the Rose Garden or Homestead Garden, including garden photography
- $1,233.40 for the same ceremony package with 30 minutes of photography inside Werribee Mansion
- $1,343 for a ceremony in the Formal Gardens, including garden photography
- $1,562.50 for a Formal Gardens ceremony with garden photography and 30 minutes inside the mansion
- $2,261.60 for a ceremony inside Werribee Mansion, including garden photography and a 30-minute mansion photography session
If you are holding your reception elsewhere but only want Werribee Mansion wedding photos, current permit pricing is $577.70 for two hours in the gardens, or $852.70 for the gardens plus 30 minutes inside the mansion.
As a very rough example, a 100-person reception at The Refectory, combined with one of the main garden ceremony and mansion photography permits, could begin at approximately $18,500 to $23,600. That is not the total cost of the wedding. It does not include suppliers such as photography, videography, flowers, entertainment, styling, celebrant, accommodation or transport.
