Weddings at Mitchelton
your guide to weddings at mitchelton, from a victoria wedding photographer
Mitchelton Winery is one of those venues that just feels epic. Set on the banks of the Goulburn River in Nagambie, about 90 minutes from Melbourne, it has that rare mix of scale and calm: vineyard views, striking architecture (that iconic tower), genuinely beautiful accommodation, and enough on site that the whole thing can feel more like a wedding weekend than a one-day event.
What I love about it is that every wedding feels different. You’ve got the river, the vines, the underground cellar, the hotel, the tower and the restaurant — there’s a lot here, but it still feels cohesive. It’s polished without being stiff, which is a hard balance to get right. One of my all time favourite venues.
Ceremony options (two great looks)
1) The River Deck
If the weather is playing nicely, the River Deck is the obvious hero. It sits right by the Goulburn, surrounded by native greenery, and gives you that open, elegant ceremony feel without needing much added to it. It’s a beautiful spot for vows, and it flows really naturally into drinks afterwards.
2) The Underground Cellar
And if the weather turns (or you want something a little more moody / intimate), Mitchelton has one of the better indoor ceremony options going. The Underground Cellar is warm, intimate and actually atmospheric — exposed brick, terracotta tones, rows of barrels. It doesn’t feel like a backup; it feels like its own thing. It has a capacity of up to 50 seated or 100 standing, which makes it especially good for more intimate ceremonies and smaller receptions too.
Reception spaces
For the reception, the main draw is the Montage Room. It’s light-filled, beautifully neutral, and designed by Hecker Guthrie, so it already has a polished feel before you’ve styled a thing. High ceilings, a proper sense of scale, and plenty of room for dinner to move naturally into dancing. Official Mitchelton event specs list the room at 140 banquet / 380 cocktail, so it comfortably handles a larger celebration.
If you want something more intimate, the Sundown Room inside the iconic Ashton Tower is a very different look. It has 360-degree views over the estate and river, and feels more private and dramatic. It’s the kind of space that suits a smaller guest list really well. And thirdly (what venue has three different, totally unique reception spaces?), the underground cellar is great for the more intimate weddings. Think candlelight, bluestone dance floor and direct access to the art gallery.
Where to get ready (and why Mitchelton works so well as a weekend venue)
This is a big part of the appeal for me. Mitchelton has 58 on-site hotel rooms, plus cabins, with floor-to-ceiling windows, private terraces, and views over the river or vineyards. So instead of everyone scattering off to different motels and Airbnbs, you can actually keep the whole thing together. Add in the day spa, art gallery, restaurant and cellar door, and it really does become more of a destination wedding without needing a flight.

- Yes — ceremony on the River Deck or in the Underground Cellar, then reception in the Montage Room or Sundown Room. It all happens in one place, which makes the day feel very easy.

- Definitely. That’s honestly one of its biggest strengths. With 58 hotel rooms, cabins, a spa, restaurant and cellar door, guests can settle in and actually enjoy being there.
Is there a strong wet-weather option?
- Yes — the Underground Cellar is a genuine rain plan, not a compromise.
How much does a Mitchelton Winery wedding cost?
