Weddings at Portico – Your Guide to Melbourne Town Hall’s Balcony Icon (CBD)

If you love the idea of a city-view ceremony with heritage drama, Portico (Melbourne Town Hall) is it: an open-air balcony above Swanston Street for “I do”, with the adjoining Portico Room as your chic indoor counterpart—right in the heart of the CBD. Available as a ceremony-only option (which is rare in Melbourne) OR paired with one of the in-house function rooms. All run by the Showtime Event Group, so you know you're re in good hands.

Ceremonies on the balcony

The star of the show. The iconic balcony. Framed by stone columns and with a marble tile flooring it’s intimate, elevated and unmistakably Melbourne. Typical capacity: ~50 seated or ~120 cocktail/standing. Clear blinds can enclose the balcony for weather without losing the view.

Reception: on site or nearby

Keep everything in one address with a Showtime Event Group reception inside Melbourne Town Hall—think Swanston Hall or other heritage style rooms - or head to a nearby reception venue or restaurant if you’re after a different vibe. Being in the heart of the CBD means you have near unlimited options.

Where to get ready: practical options

Town Hall provides a private VIP suite with their ceremony package for staging and touch-ups. We took pre-ceremony bridal portraits with Francesca here on this day (photos below). For full morning prep, most couples book a nearby CBD hotel (short tram or walk).

Best photo spots

Every Portico ceremony booking comes with a private guided half-hour photography tour of the Town Hall. Highlights include the red-carpeted stairway entrance, theatre balcony and dramatic foyer.

FAQs (Portico, Melbourne Town Hall)

  • How many guests can we host on the Portico?

Guide numbers sit around 50 seated or up to ~120 standing. Always confirm your layout with the events team.

  • What happens if it rains or gets windy?

You can enclose the balcony with clear blinds or shift inside to the Portico Room — both options keep the city look and your timeline intact.

  • What’s included in the ceremony package?

Packages commonly include décor basics (e.g., Tiffany chairs, signing table) and access to a VIP suite; confirm current inclusions and pricing with the venue.

  • Where do we take portraits nearby?

Classic loops: Treasury Gardens, Parliament Gardens, Hosier Lane — all a quick ride or short walk from Town Hall. Though this isn't 100% necessary, as they do include a guided photography tour of the Melbourne Town Hall in their packages.

  • Can we do ceremony + reception in one place?

Yes—hold your ceremony on the Portico, then move inside Melbourne Town Hall (e.g., Swanston Hall) for dinner and dancing with Showtime Event Group catering and production.
