Weddings at Panama Dining Room
After that chic Fitzroy vibe — loft warehouse, big city views, and killer food — all in one address? Panama Dining Room nails it: eight soaring arched windows, an industrial-elegant dining room and a run-sheet that keeps everything close so you can actually enjoy the party!
Ceremony: in the loft
Ceremonies in front of the floor-to-ceiling arched windows and soft light photograph beautifully and feel intimate without being cramped. Then you go right into canapés and cocktails, with the open bar directly behind you. The arched window then makes for a lovely spot for post-ceremony family photos.
Reception: the room with the arches
Think New-York-loft meets Melbourne warehouse — exposed brick, polished timber, soft light through the arches and enough space to comfortably seat ~160 seated (or ~200 cocktail) while still maintaining a large dance floor space. Leah and Jordan had SaxnCello playing at their wedding, meaning the dance floor was a vibe, and Panama was the perfect location for it.
Where to get ready: close and calm
Most couples book a nearby Fitzroy/CBD hotel or apartment for morning prep (that's what Leah and Jordan opted for), then roll straight into the venue. It keeps logistics simple and the timeline relaxed. Plenty of options available on AirBnB.
Best photo LOCATIONS NEAR PANAMA DINING ROOM
- Melbourne University: A permit is required to shoot there (so plan in advance), but it is totally worth it. Leah and Jordan opted to have a 'first look' before their ceremony here.
- Street: Smith & Gertrude Street laneways and murals for more urban Melbourne vibe.
- Green: Carlton Gardens is a great open space option, for large bridal parties or pre-ceremony family photos.
MY IDEAL timeline
I recommended to Leah and Jordan that they do a 'first look', and then portraits before the ceremony space. I feel like that's the perfect scenario for a Panama wedding, as then you don't have to leave the space following the ceremony. So, taking that into account, here is my ideal Panama Dining Room wedding day timeline:
- Prep shots at a nearby AirBNB
- First look at Melbourne University or Carlton Gardens, followed by portraits
- Late afternoon ceremony in front of the arched window - perfect.
- Family photos and cocktail hour.
- A 10 minute little golden hour or night time shoot (think: champagne pop with flash) down on Smith Street.
- First dance into dance floor fun.
Travelling & logistics (at a glance)
Where: 231 Smith St, Fitzroy.
Tram: Route 86, stop 18 is virtually at the door.
Parking: Honestly, parking is a nightmare on Smith Street. Don't bother; catch the tram, or get an uber/taxi!
FAQs (Panama Dining Room)
- Can we do both ceremony and reception on site?
Yes—ceremony up front, then straight into canapés and dinner in the same loft space.
- How many guests fit comfortably?
Guides list ~160 seated or ~200 cocktail; exact caps depend on layout and styling.
- Where should we take portraits nearby?
I would opt to do portraits before the ceremony, at either Melbourne University or Carlton Gardens, however if you'd prefer to do portraits after then Carlton Gardens and the nearby alleyways of Smith and Gertrude Street are a great option.
- Is it accessible by public transport?
Yes—Tram 86 runs along Smith Street and stops near the entrance; rideshare is easy.
